Stout discusses the propagation of Hemerocallis by seed.[1] Hartmann et. al. discuss the overall seed preparation. They recommend: Six weeks of moist chilling for good germination. Germination takes three to seven weeks at 16-21 C. Clumps divided in fall or spring, each with three off shoots. Hill & Hill recommend the following process:[2]
Seed Treatment: Let seeds dry out and stay outdoors during early fall chill Store seed in a plastic bag and place in the refrigerator for eight weeks In late January, take the seeds out and plant immediately. Soak seeds in warm water before planting to speed germination.
Planting:
Plant seed in standard nursery flat, 10"x20"x2". Use Gro or Pro Mix. Mix soil before planting with warm water. Scatter seed across the top of the mix. Cover entire surface with 1/4 inch of perlite. Water seed trays and let dry before watering again. Always use warm water. Keep the seed trays bottom heated at 7--75 F. |
