The altissima is the tallest daylily. It can be more than 6' in height, blooms later in the season and seems to take to seed fairly well. Some of the ones we have also have a yellow flower with a reddish eyezone tint, which may be the hybrid of Stout (1951) called Autumn Minaret. We have been using these for crosses to obtain height and late blooming.

The picture to the left depicts the H altissima we have been growing for several years. It is most likely a variant because of the throat coloration. H altissima generally is tall, late blooming, branched, and all light yellow. In a correspondence with Dr. Plodek it seems that this is most likely Autumn Minaret, which is a Stout hybrid of H altissima X H fulva. The other H altissima which I have are pure yellow which seems to be what is agreed to be true altissima. This plant is truly the tallest we have.

This shows the branching in H altissima. There is extensive branching of the plant and this is exhibited in the picture on the left.

This shows the H altissima in bloom in 2007.

This is alleged to be an H altissima from Olallie. We have some doubts for two reasons. First it only 36" in scape height and the bloom is early July, which seems to be much too early for an altissima. It is branched and has the correct yellow color. This is the first year bloom so we could expect a 2008 change to be more consistent.
