This is a strong early bloomer.

The H middendorfii are an orange like color all of the same uniform color on sepals and petals. The flowers are quite sessile to the scape with a covering of bracts. They tend to be one of the earliest bloomers generally in mid May.

The roots of the H middendorfii are shown to the left. They appear to be like those of dumortieri, cylindrical and elongated.

The buds on an H middendorfii are as sessile as possible. Compare these to the H dumortieri and then to the H minor as well.
