Gene Expression is a complex process. The relationship between genotype and phenotype is even more complex. For example, say we hybridize an orange flower with a yellow one, and the orange flower has long leaves and the yellow flower has short leaves, then classical Mendellian genetics assumes a dominant and recessive trait. Let us assume orange and long are dominant. The we have:

OL X ys. which is orange and long crossed with yellow and short.

Then we get the dominant in what we call the F1 and in the F2 we get the Mendellian ratios of the dominant and recessive. We generally do not get totally new things. This however is what happens with daylilies. The daylily allows in a short period of time, genes to express themselves in ways in which they never did before. The hybridizer can by using judgment and luck generate a totally new set of characteristics.

As time goes by we shall provide more details on this topic.
